Among the many companies who were presented with gold, silver and bronze awards, S-5! earned the number one spot at the gold level and was recognized for exceptional commitment to promoting and enhancing MBMA initiatives, including participation in MBMA committees, advocacy efforts to enhance the metal building systems industry, attendance at MBMA educational and promotional events and safety program participation.

S-5! was also awarded the MBMA Innovation Project Award. Gies submitted an educational awareness campaign project focused on “Metal Roofing—the Perfect Platform for Solar Installations, Associated Costs Savings & Long-Term Return-on-Investment (ROI).”

“The main benefit of this project is added growth to the overall metal construction and metal roofing industry,” said Gies. “As contractors, building owners and all project stakeholders become more aware and educated about the benefits of metal roofing as a solar PV platform and as they understand the initial costs, lifetime costs and ROI and internal rate of return (IRR), they can make better choices about utilizing metal in construction and in roofing. And MBMA member businesses will benefit from this market growth.”

“We are honored to receive these awards and to be part of such an instrumental group of industry specialists and an organization that provides much-needed resources to those who work in metal building systems,” said Rob Haddock.

AkzoNobel to provide metal coatings insights and innovations at METALCON

by Shield Wall Media Staff October 4, 2022

Metal coatings experts from AkzoNobel Coil & Extrusion Coatings will be sharing the latest product insights and innovative application techniques at METALCON 2022, in Indianapolis, October 12-14.

AkzoNobel’s specialists will be leading a technical know-how session on What’s in a coating and its warranty for your pre-painted metal, where the company’s coating experts will walk attendees through the specifics of coating technologies, warranties and specifications.

Ranked in the top 100 trade shows in the country this year by Trade Show Executive Magazine, METALCON is dedicated to the use of metal in design and construction. The show also features “The Architect’s Experience”, a show-within-a-show that aims to inspire architects and show how metal can solve the toughest building design challenges.

METALCON attendees will also have the chance to talk with AkzoNobel coil and extrusion coating experts at booth #801, where they will be addressing industry questions head-on. These will include the hot topic of supply chain concerns and the need to find alternatives to products that contain PVDF, which is in high demand largely due to its increasing use in electric vehicle and solar panel technology. AkzoNobel has launched a series of videos on PVDF coatings to help companies navigate the current supply chain situation.

“We want attendees visiting our booth to truly experience what we can do for them. AkzoNobel Coil & Extrusion Coatings provide superior solutions for all customers, whatever their projects. Our products combine high performance, excellent aesthetics, versatile applications, and stronger sustainability – and we look forward to sharing our knowledge with METALCON visitors.” says Tamara Toth, Regional Product Marketing Manager Americas.

Visitors to the AkzoNobel stand will be able to view proof of performance of its CERAM-A-STAR 1050® system. On display will be actual panels from a South Florida test fence, allowing visitors to make their own comparison and see the level of color and gloss retention of CERAM-A-STAR® 1050 coated panels after extended harsh weather exposure.

Attendees will also be able to experience AkzoNobel’s innovative Canopy app, its powerful color selection and 3D visualization tool. Canopy provides on-the-spot access to the company’s vast product database and enables users to quickly find the perfect product for pre-painted metal applications.

“Providing knowledge, insights and understanding that attendees can use in their businesses is one of our key objectives for the show. We hope to see as many people as possible at booth #801.” says Toth.

METALCON Announces Top Products Award Winners

by Shield Wall Media Staff September 8, 2022

METALCON, the metal construction industry’s only global event for metal construction and design products, technologies and solutions, announces the METALCON Top Products Award winners.

This year’s exhibitors were invited to nominate their top metal products in one of 15 product categories. Products must have been introduced to the market after Jan. 1, 2021, and its manufacturer must be a 2022 METALCON exhibiting company. Winners were determined by an electronic vote.

The 2022 METALCON Top Products Award winners are:

Accessories: Classic Gutter Systems LLC – Radius Gutter

A custom seamless radius gutter is more esthetically pleasing and worry free—the perfect solution for both historical and new construction applications. The company’s proprietary process allows them to manufacture virtually seamless radius gutters in Aluminum, Copper and GALVALUME.

Insulation and Weather Barriers: ADFAST – Adseal DWS 4580 Series

Adseal DWS 4580 is a one-component adhesive sealant that vulcanizes into a durable, resilient rubber silicone when exposed to moisture and is used for caulking, sealing and electrical insulation applications. Recommended for window and door installations, it adheres to most materials and has very little odor.

Paint and Coatings: Chemcoaters –  InterCoat® ChemGuard-AG

A hot dipped galvanized G40 substrate coated with ChemGuard-AG can out-perform a G235, while delivering savings of up to 50% on zinc extras. This revolutionary coating also allows steel to be formed dry in most cases, extends die life and offers cut-edge/self-healing protection.

Rollforming Equipment: CIDAN Machinery Group – TD Double Folder

This new technology addresses top issues facing the fabrication industry today. Together, CIDAN and Thalmann have made modular automation in architectural metals possible—this type of automation has never been on display before at METALCON.

Roofs: Novagard – NovaFlex Metal Roof Repair & Patch Mastic

NovaFlex Metal Roof Repair and Patch Mastic is an exceptionally versatile, tough yet flexible, mastic and roof sealer designed for repairs to metal panels, metal roof systems, gutters, and other metal buildings/structures. It cures quickly and provides immediate waterproofing for short-term, long-term, and emergency repairs.

Safety: Ridgeline Safety Systems – Ridgeline Safety Anchor

This anchor system is a permanent roof anchor that fits under the ridge cap and under the metal. Used for both residential and commercial, it allows anyone who needs to be on a roof a place to tie off. A “hidden anchor version” is available with the TRIM 1st system for steel slopes – 6/12 and up.

Structures: Roof Hugger – Roof Hugger Retrofit Sub-Purlins

These sub-purlins represent the first structurally correct metal roof retrofit framing members specifically designed to conform with existing industry standards.  They are made of the same thickness and tensile strength structural steel as the existing building, plus they have been tested as a system on typical metal building framing, providing proven performance for design and code compliance.

Technology: RoofersCoffeeShop® – MetalCoffeeShop™

MetalCoffeeShop is an online community consisting of a progressive and informative website, podcasts, webinars, articles, classifieds and so much more that will engage the metal industry.  Focusing on all metal, including roofing, walls, HVAC, gutters and more, this site delivers information that builds businesses while enabling ongoing conversation.

Walls: ATAS International, Inc. – Omawall PL with EVO™

Omawall PL with EVO™ is an architectural plate panel, manufactured in .10 thick aluminum ─ a great choice for high-end application, and is made fully of non-combustible materials.  EVO™ is a patented panel extrusion attachment developed by Carter Architectural.  Panels are prefabricated and field-cut, saving on installation time and costs by avoiding field-fabrication.

Construction Tools & Equipment: Triangle Fastener Corporation – PANEL-TITE® Burr Buster

PANEL-TITE with patented Burr Buster thread is now available with the ZAC Zinc/Aluminum head. It is the most compatible metal-to-wood screw for attaching AZ55 coated steel panels. The performance of the patented thread and point benefits panel manufacturers, installers and building owners by minimizing burrs, which reduces corrosion and the potential for leaks along with increasing the resistance to back-out.

Suicide Prevention in Construction Industry

by Shield Wall Media Staff September 1, 2022

On the first day of Suicide Prevention Month 2022, Associated Builders and Contractors calls on the entire construction industry to strengthen total human health among its workers and decrease the number of deaths by suicide.

In 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the construction industry had one of the highest rates of death by suicide among their workers, 5,242 in 2018, which was five times higher than U.S. construction worker fatalities on jobsites.

“This is a national tragedy, and we must end these unprecedented, unacceptable and devastating deaths among our colleagues,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC vice president of health, safety, environment and workforce development. “Construction workers work with tools every day, and we must equip these 7.7 million workers with the tools they need to prioritize mental health and protect their emotional wellbeing. They will use them.”

“It is time to shatter the stigma surrounding mental health issues with the goal of creating a zero-suicide industry,” said Sizemore. “Employers can build a resilient workforce by providing access to resources to improve total human health: physical, mental, emotional, social, mental, intellectual, financial, occupational and spiritual wellness.”

Through its partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, ABC provides construction workers and employers with resources including free suicide prevention training, the Suicide Prevention Lifeline call center, the Crisis Text Line, toolbox talks and speakers who can provide in-person, recorded and online education on suicide awareness, prevention and postvention. And under a new federal program, help-seekers can simply call 988 to connect to mental health caregivers. Visit preventconstructionsuicide.com to learn more.

Construction Job Openings Up by 22,000 in July, Says ABC

by Shield Wall Media Staff August 30, 2022

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30—The construction industry had 375,000 job openings in July, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. JOLTS defines a job opening as any unfilled position for which an employer is actively recruiting. Industry job openings increased by 22,000 last month and are up 38,000 from the same time last year.

Construction workers quit their jobs at a faster rate than they were laid off or discharged for the 17th consecutive month in July.

“Though we may have collectively experienced peak inflation, it is poised to remain unusually elevated for months to come,” said ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu. “Many factors will keep prices high, including energy crises in Europe and China as well as a dearth of available skilled workers. Today’s JOLTS release is receiving considerable attention because many hoped that job openings would decrease for the second consecutive month in July.

“That did not come to pass,” said Basu. “Economywide job openings bounced back in July and remain more than 60% above pre-pandemic levels. According to ABC’s Construction Confidence Index, the share of contractors who expect to increase their staffing levels over the next half year remains elevated but has declined in recent months. As long as the supply of labor remains inadequate to meet the demand for workers, the industry will continue to experience upward wage pressures.”

Homes For Our Troops Raises Over $2 Million for Severely Injured Post-9/11 Veterans

by Shield Wall Media Staff June 7, 2022

The Effort Will Build Homes and Rebuild Lives for Veterans

ABC Supply Co. Inc., the nation’s largest wholesale distributor of roofing, siding and other select exterior and interior building products, is proud to announce a final donation total of over $2 million as part of its sponsorship of Homes for Our Troops (HFOT). The company pledged to match every donation up to $1 million total for the nonprofit organization as part of a 10-day fundraising effort that took place May 21 through May 30 – coinciding with the 106th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge.

In addition to the donation match, ABC Supply also volunteered the design of their No. 11 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet to HFOT, an organization that builds and donates specially adapted custom homes across the United States for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans. As the nonprofit invests nearly 90% of donations directly back into its mission and depends on word-of-mouth marketing, ABC Supply’s goal was to shine a national spotlight on HFOT and its work to change the lives of the more than 1,000 military Veterans who have severe physical and traumatic brain injuries.

Founded in 2004, HFOT seeks to build homes and in turn, rebuild the lives of these Veterans, restoring some of the freedom and independence they’ve sacrificed in defending our county. To date, HFOT has built and donated over 330 homes for severely injured post-9/11 Veterans. After the homes are built, the relationships between HFOT and their Veterans continue — the organization provides a pro-bono financial planner to assist with budgeting, homeownership education, a peer mentoring program and more.

“We are blown away by the generosity of those who supported HFOT throughout our matching donation campaign,” says Mike Jost, chief operating officer at ABC Supply. “And we also want to congratulate J.R. Hildebrand and everyone at AJ Foyt Racing for a fantastic showing at this year’s Indianapolis 500. The excitement of the race provided an excellent backdrop to spread the word about the great work HFOT is doing.”

“Grateful doesn’t begin to cover how we feel about ABC Supply’s sponsorship and support,” says HFOT President and CEO Tom Landwermeyer. “The IndyCar donation gave us incredible visibility during one of the largest single-day sporting events in the world, and it means so much to have a whole new audience aware of our mission.”

ABC Supply has been a multimillion-dollar supporter of HFOT since 2020.

Those who missed the matching donation opportunity can still donate to Homes For Our Troops by visiting https://www.hfotusa.org/.
